In my last business, where I had grown it from 1 employee to 10 employees over a number of years I found that regular, consistent communication between manager and employees is essential, coupled with appropriate goal setting. But the challenge I was having was how did I make sure they really delivered, and how could I keep track of commitments that were made to me. I was having hundreds of conversations every week with staff, face-to-face or by phone, email, instant messenger, etc. A quarterly appraisal was definitely worthwhile, but in between I was looking for something simpler.

I started asking employees to write down their top 5 weekly priorities, and email me these. This helped them focus, but it helped me understand what they considered important. Taking this idea one step further Teamly, which is my new business, has built an online software tool to help staff commit to these priorities and then share these for review by their manager and team-mates. It combines daily, weekly and monthly priority and goal setting for the individual with real-time information on staff for managers.

You can find out more about it at http://teamly.com

Delegating the lawn is a start! Read Getting Things Done by David Allen: http://www.davidco.com

He talks about not only managing and delegating in business but in your personal life as well. You have to do both to be succesful.

Good article but I guess I'm not there yet. I'd love to delegate but it's just me. I did delegate the lawn mowing last week so maybe there is hope. I'm glad I found your blogg. Thanks for the advice.
