You make some excellent points. The good news is that these days you only need to go the "extra inch" to succeed because you can rely on most rivals going the "crappy" route. The great key to success is self belief. Once you have that, everything flows.

As a student, I agree 100% with you tips — they have personally helped me land job offers. Being an entrepreneur though, I decided to decline then and work full-time on my own business so one day I can be the one reviewing resumes!

This is great feedback Dave. I will tell if you took the time to impress me, I will always do my best to at least respond, because your right, its the right thing to do. I am probably guilty though of not doing this and hearing this from you will make me conscience of it next time.

I am guilty of not including a cover letter. The main reason is because it can be a complete waste of time.

If I want to write a cover letter, it can take me 8 hours to do research, write, edit and send the letter.

Even when I use a cover letter, most, 90% of the jobs I apply for, I never, ever get any kind of response from the employer. 5% have an auto reply to my application and 5% get an interview. I stopped writing cover letters.

I think if I spend 8 hours putting together a cover letter, I am entitled to a response to thank me for applying, and a reason why I am did not qualify for an interview. Most employers ignore applicants and when applying for a job I have to keep my spirits up.

The constant rejection can be hard on a person's spirit.
